Residents and visitors in South Walton and Coastal Bay areas are advised to stay out of the water due to a Rip Current Statement and High Surf Warning issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee FL. The Rip Current Statement is effective immediately, October 9 at 11:37 AM EDT, and continues until October 12 at 4:00 AM EDT. The High Surf Warning is in effect from 10 AM Friday to 10 AM CDT Sunday.

Dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves are expected. The NWS forecasts dangerously large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet in the surf zone. These conditions pose a significant risk, as breaking waves can sweep individuals off jetties and docks into dangerous seas, and rip currents can pull even strong swimmers away from shore.

Everyone is urged to remain out of the water due to life-threatening surf conditions. Additionally, stay off of jetties, piers, and other waterside infrastructure. If you are ever caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. If able, swim parallel to the shoreline. If you cannot escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.

This alert specifically impacts Walton and Bay County Beaches. The NWS warns of life-threatening swimming conditions and potential significant beach erosion.
