Vivalon Reflects on Older Americans Month and Community Connection

May is a time to recognize older adults and the role we all play in supporting one another.   Each May, communities across the country recognize Older Americans Month, a time to reflect on the contributions, resilience, and experiences of older adults.   At Vivalon, this recognition is not confined to a single month. It is something we see every day—in the relationships formed over shared meals, in the quiet reliability of a ride to a medical appointment, in the determination to learn something new, and in the simple but meaningful moments of connection that shape how we experience aging.   Older adulthood is often described in broad terms, but in reality, it is made up of individual stories, daily routines, and the small interactions that can either create ease or introduce challenges. For many, maintaining independence is not just about health, but about access—access to transportation, to nourishing food, to information, and to community. It is also about whether someone feels seen.   In a time when so much of life is moving faster and becoming more digital, these moments of connection matter more than ever. A conversation in the café. A volunteer taking a few extra minutes to check in. A class that turns unfamiliar technology into something approachable. These experiences are not incidental. They are essential.   Older Americans Month offers an opportunity to consider how we, as a community, show up for one another. Not through grand gestures, but through consistent, everyday actions that make it easier for people to navigate their lives with dignity and confidence. At Vivalon, this work takes many forms. It looks like meals delivered to someone who might otherwise go without. It looks like transportation that ensures a person can attend a medical appointment or stay engaged with their community. It looks like programs that create space for learning, creativity, and connection. But beyond services, it is about something more fundamental: the belief that no one should age alone. That belief is reflected in the people who walk through our doors, the volunteers who give their time, and the broader community that continues to support this work. It is reflected in the understanding that caring for older adults is not separate from the health of a community—it is central to it.   This month, as we recognize Older Americans Month, we also recognize the collective role we all play in shaping what aging looks like in our community. The strongest communities are not defined by how they serve a few, but by how they show up for everyone. It is often the smallest moments of connection that make the greatest difference.

San Rafael Leader Joins Vivalon's Champions Week Meal Delivery Program

This week, Vivalon welcomed elected officials from across Marin and beyond to participate in Champions Week, an annual event that brings community leaders onto meal delivery routes to experience firsthand the impact of home-delivered nutrition services.   Over the course of the week, participants loaded meals, knocked on doors, shared conversations, and met the older adults and people with disabilities who rely on Vivalon’s nutrition programs. Along the way, they saw something our staff and volunteers witness every day: meal delivery is about much more than food. It’s about connection, care, and helping people remain healthy and independent in the homes they love.     This year’s Champions Week participants included U.S. Congressman Jared Huffman, Fairfax Mayor Stephanie Hellman, San Anselmo Mayor Steve Burdo, Marin County Supervisors Eric Lucan and Mary Sackett, San Rafael Councilmember Rachel Kertz, Novato Councilmember Pat Eklund, and Assemblymember Damon Connolly.   For many recipients, a meal delivery is also a friendly visit, a wellness check, and a reminder that someone in the community cares. Champions Week offers elected officials a unique opportunity to see these moments firsthand and learn more about the growing need for nutrition services throughout Marin.     That need continues to increase. Since 2016, Vivalon’s home-delivered nutrition programs have grown significantly, with the number of participants served increasing by 55% and the number of meals delivered increasing by 69%. In 2026 alone, Vivalon provided 123,613 home-delivered meals through its Meals on Wheels and Nourish programs to 774 older adults and people with disabilities.   What stood out most during the week were the simple but meaningful interactions at doorsteps across Marin: smiles, conversations, words of appreciation, and the connections formed between neighbors who may never have met otherwise.   “Vivalon is providing so much more than food,” says San Rafael Councilmember Rachel Kertz. “They are providing a touch point that is so important. They are delivering food to folks who live alone and don’t have much contact with the outside world.”   We are grateful to each of the elected officials who joined us for Champions Week and took the time to learn more about the people we serve. Their participation helps shine a light on the importance of nutrition services and the role they play in helping older adults and people with disabilities thrive.   Thank you to our staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners who make this work possible every day. Together, we’re delivering more than meals—we’re delivering nourishment, connection, and peace of mind.   Take a look at highlights from the week here.   Want to be part of the impact?   Volunteer Help bring nourishment, connection, and care to older adults and people with disabilities throughout Marin. Vivalon Celebrates Volunteers Who Delivered 13,600+ Hours of Community Care

April is Volunteer Appreciation Month. It gives us a reason to pause and say thank you, but the truth is, what our volunteers make possible is felt every single day.   At Vivalon, volunteers do so much more than support programs. A knock on the door for a meal delivery, a ride to the grocery store, a familiar face in a classroom—these moments create connection, build trust, and remind others that they are valued and part of a community. Over the past year, that impact has added up in powerful ways: 5,355 hours delivering meals to people who are homebound through Meals on Wheels and Nourish 4,369.5 hours serving delicious, affordable meals in the Vivalon Café 3,135 hours distributing food to people facing food insecurity through the Brown Bag Pantry 688 hours providing rides to medical appointments and the grocery store for older adults who can no longer drive through CarePool 406.5 hours tutoring clients and supporting classes through our Technology Programs 311 hours from instructors sharing their knowledge 252.5 hours supporting programs at the Healthy Aging Campus 120 hours leading social groups and offering opportunities for support and connection 17 hours lending skills behind the scenes to keep everything running through administrative support   Behind every number is a person, and behind every hour is a moment of connection.   For some, that connection can be life-changing.   Lee, a longtime Meals on Wheels volunteer, shared that for him, the role has never been just about delivering food. It’s about paying attention, building relationships, and showing up consistently. That attentiveness made all the difference when he noticed something wasn’t right during a routine visit. Trusting his instincts and speaking up helped ensure a client received urgent medical care in time.   As he once put it: “Helping others is one way of taking positive action in an increasingly complex and often confusing world.”   For others, volunteering becomes a way to bridge generations.   Sidney, a high school student who first joined Vivalon to help older adults with technology, quickly found something more meaningful in the experience. What began as tutoring grew into leadership, as she helped create a space where people of different ages could come together, share experiences, and learn from one another.   Her work reminds us that connection isn’t just about support. It’s about understanding, curiosity, and building relationships that go both ways.   For some volunteers, this work is simply a continuation of a lifelong commitment to caring for others.   At 95, Miriam volunteers each week in the Brown Bag Pantry with energy and enthusiasm, helping provide food to those who need it most. She balances her time volunteering with classes, friendships, and a full schedule at the Healthy Aging Campus.   “I love it here—it’s like being on a college campus,” she says. “Everyone is warm and welcoming. I’ve made new friends, have a great routine, and I never feel invisible—or bored!”   Her words capture something essential. This work is not just about meeting needs. It’s about creating places where people feel seen, valued, and connected.   That is what volunteers make possible.   Every ride, every meal, every class, and every conversation adds up to something much bigger: community where older adults can live with dignity, independence, and a true sense of belonging.   To all of our volunteers: thank you for being part of what makes this community stronger every day.
