Strong Thunderstorm Warning for Whitley, Knox, Bell Counties

Residents in Whitley, Knox, and Bell Counties should prepare for a strong thunderstorm. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, KY, issued a Special Weather Statement at 10:18 PM EDT tonight, September 21, 2026, which is expected to expire at 11:00 PM EDT.

Doppler radar is tracking a strong thunderstorm over Indian Creek, near Barbourville, moving east at 20 mph. This storm is capable of producing wind gusts up to 40 mph. Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Localized flooding is also possible due to torrential rainfall. Do not drive through flooded roadways.

Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek safe shelter immediately inside a building or a vehicle.

Areas impacted include Barbourville, Pineville, Artemus, and surrounding communities. U.S. Highway 25 East in Bell County (between mile markers 14 and 18) and Knox County (between mile markers 1 and 25) are also affected. To report severe weather, contact your nearest law enforcement agency.
