BAKER COUNTY, GA – A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Baker County, including Newton, effective immediately until 1:30 PM UTC today, October 9, 2026. The National Weather Service in Tallahassee, FL, urges residents to complete all preparations now.

Expect winds of 15-25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, potentially reaching tropical storm force (39-57 mph). Damage to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes is possible, along with downed tree limbs and scattered power outages. Hazardous driving conditions are anticipated, especially on elevated roadways.

A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 3-6 inches of rain expected, leading to a potential for major flooding. Evacuations and rescues are likely, with rivers potentially overflowing and many structures experiencing flooding. Do not drive through flooded roads.

The situation is favorable for several tornadoes, some potentially intense. Residents in manufactured homes or boats should relocate to safer shelter immediately. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if a warning is issued.
