BAKER COUNTY – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Tallahassee, FL has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Baker County, effective immediately as of October 8 at 5:22 PM EDT. Residents in Newton and surrounding areas should finalize preparations as hazardous conditions are anticipated.

Forecasters predict peak winds of 10-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, with a potential for sustained winds of 39-57 mph. Efforts to protect property should be underway. Expect limited damage to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes, along with broken tree limbs and possible scattered power outages.

A Flood Watch is also in effect. Rainfall of 3-6 inches, with locally higher amounts, could lead to moderate flooding, prompting evacuations and rescues. Rivers may swell, and low-lying areas could experience rapid inundation. Heed all flood watches and warnings.

The NWS also indicates a potential for several tornadoes, with some possibly intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if a warning is issued. This Tropical Storm Watch is set to expire on October 9 at 1:30 AM UTC.
