Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Lee County: Prepare for Winds, Flooding, Tornadoes
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Lee County, including Auburn and Opelika, with residents urged to prepare for hazardous winds, moderate flooding, and potential tornadoes from the National Weather Service.
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Lee County, including Auburn and Opelika, by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, effective immediately from October 8 at 4:07 PM CDT until October 9 at 12:15 AM UTC. Residents should act now to complete preparations as hazardous conditions are anticipated.
The NWS forecasts peak winds of 10-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, with potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Damage to outdoor structures, tree limbs, and some power outages are possible. Efforts to protect property should be underway, and all preparations must be completed before winds become hazardous.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 1-3 inches of rain expected and locally higher amounts. This could lead to moderate flooding, prompting possible evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings; failure to take action may result in serious injury or loss of life. Rivers, streams, and ditches may overflow, causing hazardous driving conditions and some road closures.
Furthermore, conditions are favorable for the development of several tornadoes, with a few possibly intense, having larger damage paths. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if one is issued. Significant impacts could include roofs torn off, homes demolished, and dangerous projectiles. For more information, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
