Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Auburn, Opelika; Prepare for Hazardous Conditions

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Auburn and Opelika, urging residents to prepare for hazardous winds, moderate flooding, and potential tornadoes from the National Weather Service.

A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Auburn and Opelika, effective from 1:19 AM CDT today, October 9, until 9:30 AM CDT. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, advises residents to act now to complete preparations for hazardous wind, potential moderate flooding, and the possibility of several tornadoes.

Wind speeds are forecast between 10-20 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, and there is a potential for winds reaching 39 to 57 mph. Residents should plan for hazardous wind equivalent to tropical storm force and prepare for limited damage to property, including porches, awnings, and unanchored mobile homes. Some large tree limbs may break, and a few trees could snap or uproot, leading to scattered power and communications outages. Driving conditions may become hazardous on bridges and elevated roadways.

A Flood Watch is in effect, with 1-3 inches of rainfall expected, and locally higher amounts possible. There is a potential for moderate flooding, which could prompt evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and small streams could overflow. Floodwaters may enter some structures, and several places could experience rapid inundation at underpasses and low-lying areas, making driving hazardous. Heed any flood watches and warnings immediately.

The situation is favorable for tornadoes, with a potential for several, some possibly intense. Residents in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings, and be ready to shelter quickly if a warning is issued. Significant impacts could include tornado damage, power loss, and communications failures.
