Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Lee County: Prepare for Severe Weather
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Lee County, including Auburn and Opelika, until 9:00 PM CDT today; residents should prepare for hazardous wind, moderate flooding, and potential tornadoes.
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Lee County, including Auburn and Opelika, by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, effective today, October 8, 2026, at 12:59 PM CDT and expiring at 9:00 PM CDT.
Residents should act now to complete preparations for hazardous wind, potential moderate flooding, and several possible tornadoes. Plan for winds of 10-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, with the potential for winds reaching 39 to 57 mph. Damage to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes is possible, along with downed tree limbs, scattered power outages, and hazardous driving conditions. Efforts to protect property should be underway.
A Flood Watch is in effect, with 1-3 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts. Emergency plans should include the potential for moderate flooding. Consider protective actions if you are in a flood-vulnerable area. Heed any flood watches and warnings; evacuations and rescues are possible. Floodwaters may enter structures and make some roads impassable.
The situation is favorable for several tornadoes, with a few possibly intense. Those living in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter before hazardous weather arrives. Listen for tornado watches and warnings. If a tornado warning is issued, be ready to shelter quickly. Tornadoes could cause considerable damage, power loss, and communications failures. For more information, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
