Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Auburn, Opelika; Prepare for Hazardous Conditions

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Auburn and Opelika, with residents urged to prepare for hazardous winds, potential flooding, and tornadoes. Act now to secure property and heed all weather advisories.

A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Auburn and Opelika in Lee County, effective tonight, October 8, at 10:27 PM CDT, by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL. This watch will remain in effect until October 9, 2026, 6:30 AM UTC.

Residents are advised to complete all preparations now as hazardous winds and potential flooding are anticipated. Wind gusts up to 45 mph are expected, with the potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Prepare for limited damage to property such as porches, awnings, and unanchored mobile homes. Large tree limbs may break, and some trees could be snapped or uprooted. Scattered power and communications outages are possible.

A Flood Watch is also in effect. Emergency plans should include the potential for moderate flooding from 1-3 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts. Rivers and tributaries may become swollen, and some structures could experience flooding. Heed all flood watches and warnings.

The NWS also indicates a favorable situation for tornadoes, with the potential for several, some possibly intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if one is issued. Significant impacts from tornadoes could include widespread damage, power loss, and dangerous projectiles.
