Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Auburn, Opelika; Prepare Now

A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Lee County, including Auburn and Opelika, effective immediately. The National Weather Service in Birmingham, AL issued the warning today, October 9, at 4:20 PM CDT. Residents are urged to complete all preparations now as hazardous conditions are expected to begin before the warning expires at 12:30 AM CDT on October 10.

Forecasters anticipate winds of 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. There is potential for wind speeds between 39 to 57 mph. Prepare for limited wind damage, including unsecured objects blowing around and broken tree limbs. Scattered power and communication outages are possible. Efforts to protect property should be underway.

A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 1-3 inches of rain expected, potentially leading to moderate flooding. Rivers and streams may overflow, causing road closures and hazardous driving. Heed all flood watches and warnings.

The situation is also favorable for several tornadoes, with a few possibly intense. Those in manufactured homes or boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly. For more information, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
