Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Auburn, Opelika; Act Now to Prepare
A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Auburn and Opelika in Lee County, with hazardous winds, moderate flooding, and potential tornadoes expected; residents should act immediately to prepare and heed all warnings.
A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Auburn and Opelika in Lee County, effective immediately as of October 9 at 6:57 PM CDT. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, reports that residents should act now to complete preparations before hazardous wind conditions begin. This warning is in effect until October 10 at 3:00 AM UTC.
Peak wind gusts of 15-25 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph, are expected, posing a limited threat of damage to unanchored structures, large tree limbs, and signs. Scattered power and communications outages are possible. Efforts to protect property should be underway.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 1-3 inches of rain possible, with locally higher amounts. This presents a potential for moderate flooding, which may prompt evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings. Rivers, creeks, and ditches may overflow, and some roads may become impassable. Consider protective actions if you are in a flood-vulnerable area.
The NWS indicates a somewhat favorable situation for a few tornadoes. If your shelter is vulnerable, prepare to relocate to a safer location before hazardous weather arrives. If a tornado warning is issued, be ready to shelter quickly.
