Hurricane, Storm Surge Watches Issued for Coastal Gulf Coast
Hurricane and Storm Surge Watches are in effect for parts of coastal Alabama and the western Florida panhandle as Tropical Storm Isaias strengthens, bringing threats of surge, wind, flooding, and tornadoes.
Residents across coastal Alabama and the western Florida panhandle should prepare immediately as Hurricane and Storm Surge Watches have been issued for several areas, according to a Tropical Cyclone Local Statement released by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Mobile, AL at 11:32 AM CDT today, October 7th.
Tropical Storm Isaias, currently located about 660 miles south-southwest of Mobile, AL, is expected to strengthen into a hurricane and make landfall along the north central Gulf Coast. Life-threatening storm surge, significant wind impacts, and heavy rainfall leading to extensive flooding are possible. Forecasters predict 3 to 6 inches of rain with localized amounts up to 10 inches near the coast. A tornado threat is also expected Friday through Saturday.
Specifically, a Storm Surge Watch and Hurricane Watch are in effect for Baldwin Central, Baldwin Coastal, Escambia Coastal, Mobile Central, Mobile Coastal, Okaloosa Coastal, and Santa Rosa Coastal. A Hurricane Watch has also been issued for Baldwin Inland, Escambia Inland, Mobile Inland, Okaloosa Inland, and Santa Rosa Inland.
The NWS advises checking emergency plans and supply kits. Do not focus on the exact storm track; hazards extend well beyond the center.
