“Jesus said, ‘But I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you'” (Matt. 5:44 KJV). Jesus did not command us to love without giving us the ability to love. Now, you have to admit, Matthew 5:44 is much easier said than done. However, if your love walk is not in order, your prayers will not be successful. Let’s take a closer look at this text. To put it in plain Detroit language, Jesus is saying that you should bless them that curse you out and talk about your mama. If someone talks about your mama, it’s real easy for you to retaliate in the flesh. Knowing that, you must continually fellowship with the Lord in prayer, because prayer will keep you in the right place. Jesus said to bless them that curse you, and then do good to them that hate you. Jesus commands you to pray for them who have been using you. There are times when you know you are being used by someone, or you know that they used you, and after they were through using you, they kicked you to the curb like a piece of trash. God said that’s who He wants you to pray for. But to do that you must get past your flesh. And the way that you can bypass your flesh is to be a man or woman of prayer. You may say, “This is a hard thing to do, Bishop Butler.” It is, because when people do you wrong the natural thing to do is to retaliate. That’s how it works in the natural physical world. But notice how the kingdom of God works. When you pray for individuals that come against you, you open the door to be a blessing to them. They are still God’s children, even if they treat you lousy. Even if they are not God’s children, your godly response to them will be a witness to them of how much God loves them, and perhaps win them to the Lord. Additionally, God will do something about them because of your prayer, and then He will do something for you because of your prayer. It is the law of sowing and reaping. And notice that it is all based on love. When you were born again, you received the ability to operate in the love of God. That love was deposited in you, and is an indicator of your salvation. First John 3:14 says, “We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren.” This is how we know that something happened to us when we were born again. We love the brethren. You know you must be saved when you would turn off your favorite television show and spend time praying in tongues for the brethren. Well this is how we know that we are born again. The love of God in us is shown toward everyone. Allow that love to flow toward those who do you wrong. By doing so, you are opening the door for God to work in their life and in yours. Scripture References: Luke 6:27-38; Romans 12:17-21 Keith Butler Ministries All rights reserved. Used by permission. “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you” (1 Peter 5:6). When I first learned to cast my cares on the Lord, I was down in South Texas preaching a meeting that nobody was coming to. I’m telling you, people were staying away from that meeting by the thousands; and after a service or two with just the preacher, one or two others and me in attendance, I was starting to sweat it. But the Lord said, Cast that care on Me, so I did. I started walking around grinning and whistling. I told the devil, “I’m not going to frown or have one worried thought. I came here to preach and that’s what I’m going to do, and it’s God’s business whether anyone shows up or not. I couldn’t care less!” I went around so happy I felt downright foolish. The devil said, “What’s the matter with you? Don’t you even have sense enough to worry over something like this?” I suppose people were saying, “I guess he’s too dumb to worry. I think it’s because he’s never been to seminary. He can’t tell a landslide from a flop.” But I told the Lord, “I have my care rolled over on You, and if nobody shows up but that one dear old woman, she’s going to be the most preached-up old woman in the state of Texas because I’m going to preach just the same as if there were a crowd.” I didn’t realize then what was happening, but that carefree attitude put me in an uncompromising position with the devil. He couldn’t get to me anymore. He couldn’t get me in fear and unbelief anymore. He couldn’t pressure me and get me to compromise because I didn’t care. I’d given all my care to God! Are you ready to be free of care? If you are, just make this confession of faith: I’m a believer. I’m not a doubter. The Word works in me; and at this moment, I humble myself under the mighty hand of God. I cast all my care over on Him. From this moment forward, I refuse to worry. Instead, I will pray. I will use my faith and believe, and He’ll exalt me over the problem and over the devil. For I belong to Jesus and He cares for me! God-given dreams are not always given in the night. Many are like pictures of the future which He paints on the canvas of our hearts. God-given dreams will cause us to begin to desire specific things that actually are God-inspired desires. They will continue to increase in us, coming into focus and developing into something powerful and real on the inside. The more we realize God has shown us a part of His plan, the more we will be empowered and directed. There are four aspects which are important in order to see these God-given dreams become realities. First, God will deliver us from all that has prevented us from receiving from Him. John 8:31-32 says, “Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, ‘If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free’” (NKJV). The power of His truth is alive in us and makes us free. God’s Word does more than set us free—it makes us free. The more alive His Word is in our minds and spirits the more liberty we have. We are free to think His thoughts and know His ways. The Holy Spirit will bring God’s Word to life in our inner man. As we meditate on the Word, and pray in the Holy Spirit, we will experience the delivering power of God rising up within us. In the midst of any situation, we can rely on His strength within to keep us free. We are a new person in Christ who is now free from destructive habits, thoughts and conversation. We are free to act on His Word. Each step toward God’s dream for our lives requires that we draw upon His strength that has been deposited in our hearts. God has already given us 100% permanent victory. When we know we are totally free in Christ a temporary setback will not bother us. The Lord will continue to refine us and mold us into a more useful vessel. The closer we walk with Him the more He will point out things in our lives that do not please Him. He is always teaching and encouraging us to grow in excellence. God’s ways are the ways that bring the greatest benefits and results. David said it so well in Psalm 34: I will praise the Lord no matter what happens. I will constantly speak of his glories and grace. I will boast of all his kindness to me. Let all who are discouraged take heart. Let us praise the Lord together and exalt his name. For I cried to Him and He answered me! He freed me from all my fears. (Ps. 34:1-4 TLB) Jesus has delivered us so that we would live in freedom. “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage” (Galatians 5:1 NKJV). He wants to refine us and mold us into a more useful vessel. Make the decision today to walk with Him closer than ever before. Dennis Burke Ministries All rights reserved. Used by permission.
