Dayton Honors Paul Laurence Dunbar at Annual Graveside Tribute
Woodland Cemetery, members of the Dunbar Alumni Association and Dayton Dunbareans will celebrate another annual graveside tribute to Dayton’s own Paul Laurence Dunbar on June 26th. Dunbar’s birthday was June 27th. Paul Laurence Dunbar became the first African-American poet to earn national distinction and acceptance. He was born and raised in Dayton. His short thirty-three years of life were filled with literary achievement and contributions that catapulted him to national and international fame and appreciation. The President of Wilberforce University and the Wilberforce University Choir rendered the first graveside tribute to Paul Laurence Dunbar in the year of 1906. In 1988, five Dunbar devotees found themselves standing in front of Mr. Dunbar’s grave on the day of his death to pay their respects. The five decided to collectively commemorate Dunbar’s date of death in the future and thus established an annual graveside tribute. Through the years, the Dayton Dunbar Alumni Association, the National Park Service, Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum and community volunteers have continued to support the annual tribute. It is through the efforts of LaVerne Sci, a Dunbar scholar who once served as the Dunbar House site manager, that the annual tribute is still celebrated. “Dunbar wrote with Dayton as his solid foundation and as his reference,” stated Mrs. Sci. “It was in Dayton that he found his richest and greatest experiences and all the elements of beauty and joy that he enjoyed.” The Annual Paul Laurence Dunbar Graveside Tribute will begin with a gathering at the grave site of Mr. Dunbar at 10:00 a.m. where a laying of a wreath will take place. A short program of readings and stories will then follow inside the Woodland Mausoleum given by devoted friends of Paul Laurence Dunbar. The event is free and open to the public. All are invited to both the graveside and Mausoleum services. Participants may gather at the front entrance of the Mausoleum at 9:45 a.m. for a processional to the Dunbar grave. Obituary: Helen A. Chapman
Wednesday, May 13, 2026 from 11:00 AM until 12:00 Noon at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home Graveside services will follow at 12:30 PM at Quincy Memorial Park Cemetery Helen A. Chapman, age 84, of Liberty, IL, died on Friday, May 8, 2026 in Blessing Hospital. She was born on March 8, 1942 in Quincy, the daughter of Carl & Rose (Veile) Sohl. She married David Chapman on October 15, 1964. He survives. Helen attended St. Francis Grade School and was a 1960 graduate of Notre Dame High School. Helen was later a graduate of the St. Mary School of Nursing and worked for a time as an RN. Helen was a Girl Scout when young, was a leader when her daughters became Girl Scouts and remained with the organization throughout her life. She also enjoyed bowling and camping, was a member of the Saddle Club and liked going to horse shows. She also spent a lot of years roller skating with the family. Helen was an avid quilter and quilted up to the very end of her life. She was a member of the ‘Sew Happy Quilters’ of Liberty, the Tuesday Quilters at John Wood Community College and the Quincy Quilters Guild. She was a loving grandmother and supported her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids in band, sports and all of their other endeavors. In addition to her husband, Helen is also survived by: CHILDREN: Angie Rost (John) of Liberty, IL; Becky Rost (Greg) of Quincy, IL; Bill Chapman (Lori) also of Quincy and Carla Chapman (Richie) of Payson. GRANDCHILDREN: Cassie Berthoud (Robb); Alex Rost (Taylor), Charity Rost and John Rost II; Krissy Brunk (Jeremy), Nick Dyer, Zania Dyer, Zane Dyer (Yvette), Dawn Reich (Scott) and Amanda Shanahan (Keith); Zach Chapman (Madison), Jacob Chapman and Levi Chapman; Ricky Martin, Jordan Martin, and Harley Martin. GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN: Hazel, Lain, Kaden, Lauren, Kaiser, Brayden, Bentley and Jude; Jaden, Gracey Helen, Jason, Natasha, Colton, Vincent, Paisley, Dante, Reylan, Kyndall, Kaitlyn, Aaron and Riley, Jacob and Jiselle. Nephews, cousins and other relatives also survive. Helen was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson Steven Rost. A Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2026 from 11:00 AM until 12:00 Noon at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at 12:30 PM at Quincy Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Adams County Folks Care. The Duker & Haugh Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Helen was a gifted quilter and sweet lady. Her family will always have a part of her when they use the quilts she made them. Our sympathies and prayers are with the family. The St, Mary Hospital community are remembering Helen as she walked the halls of St. Mary as a student nurse leaving her footprint on the St. Mary legacy. She will be added to our “Friends Remembered” book. Helen was a very kind hearted woman and had been a loving grandmother to all of her grandkids and her great grandmother It was always a joy to visit with Helen! She did a lot of good works just by talking to people as she worked at school! With a heavy heart, I have to tell you that I will not be able to attend the services tomorrow. My prayers and thoughts are with all of you! To Helen’s family, The Nurse Honor Guard honors Helen and her life as a Nurse. Thank you Helen for being our colleague. We may not have worked beside her but shared in her care for patients, family and friends. Helen will be remembered by the difference she made in peoples lives. It may have been a quiet word, a soft touch or merely her presence. To embrace the woes of the world, willingly, and offer hope Helen was there. NHG Angie and family, I always enjoyed seeing your mom when I attended the quilt meetings in Camp Point. She was very talented and I know she passed that along. I’m sad to realize we shared being nurses and she was a SMH graduate we could have had even more to visit about. May God sustain you with your faith, memories, quilts and pictures.
