SUMTER COUNTY, GA - The National Weather Service (NWS) Peachtree City has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Sumter County, including Americus, effective immediately, October 8 at 5:17 PM EDT. This watch will remain in effect until October 9 at 1:30 AM UTC.
Residents should prepare for hazardous wind, potential moderate flooding from heavy rainfall, and the possibility of several tornadoes. Peak wind forecasts are 10-20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, but the potential exists for winds of 39 to 57 mph. Damage to unsecured objects, large tree limbs, and scattered power outages are possible.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 2-4 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. Moderate rainfall flooding may lead to evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries could overflow, and some structures may experience flooding.
The situation is favorable for tornadoes, with a potential for several, some possibly intense. Tornadoes can cause significant damage, power loss, and communications failures.
