TALLAPOOSA COUNTY – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Tallapoosa County, including the cities of Alexander City and Dadeville, effective immediately. This alert, issued October 8 at 10:27 PM CDT, warns of severe weather conditions with potential for significant impacts from wind, flooding rain, and tornadoes.
Residents should act now to complete preparations for hazardous wind. Peak wind gusts of up to 45 mph are expected, with the potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Damage to outdoor structures, tree limbs, and some power outages are possible. Efforts to protect property should be underway.
A Flood Watch is also in effect. Prepare for moderate flooding from 1-3 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts. Emergency plans should include potential evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings; failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life. Rivers and small streams may overflow, and floodwaters could enter structures.
The NWS also indicates a favorable situation for several tornadoes, with a few possibly intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if one is issued. Significant impacts from tornadoes could include considerable damage, power loss, and communications failures.
