SHELBY COUNTY – A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Shelby County, including Columbiana, Pelham, and Alabaster, effective immediately as of October 9 at 4:08 AM CDT by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL. This watch indicates the potential for tropical storm conditions within the next 48 hours.
Residents should prepare for hazardous winds ranging from 39 to 57 mph, with peak gusts potentially reaching 50 mph. Damage to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes is possible. Expect broken tree limbs, some snapped or uprooted trees, and scattered power and communications outages. All remaining efforts to protect property should be completed as soon as possible. Move to safe shelter before hazardous winds begin.
A Flood Watch is also in effect. The NWS forecasts 1-3 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts, posing a significant threat of moderate flooding. This could lead to evacuations and rescues, with rivers overflowing and small streams inundating low-lying areas. Roads may become impassable due to debris and standing water. Consider protective actions if you are in a flood-vulnerable area and heed all flood watches and warnings.
Tornadoes are not expected at this time. This Tropical Storm Watch is set to expire on October 9, 2026, at 12:15 PM UTC. For more information and safety tips, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
