SHELBY COUNTY, AL – A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Shelby County, including the communities of Columbiana, Pelham, and Alabaster, effective immediately. The National Weather Service in Birmingham, AL, issued the alert today, October 9, at 6:57 AM CDT.

Residents should prepare for hazardous wind conditions, with peak gusts potentially reaching 50 mph. Damage to outdoor property such as porches, awnings, and unanchored mobile homes is possible. Scattered power outages and impassable roads due to debris are also anticipated. All remaining efforts to protect property should be completed as soon as possible. Move to safe shelter before hazardous winds begin.

A Flood Watch is also in effect. Expect 1-3 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts, creating a potential for moderate flooding. This could lead to evacuations and rescues, with rivers and small streams overflowing. Residents in flood-vulnerable areas should consider protective actions and heed all flood watches and warnings. Failure to take action could result in serious injury or loss of life.

The Tropical Storm Watch is set to expire today, October 9, at 3:00 PM UTC (10:00 AM CDT). For more information and preparedness resources, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
