Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Shelby County: Prepare for Winds, Flooding
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Shelby County, including Columbiana, Pelham, and Alabaster, by the NWS, forecasting hazardous winds up to 55 mph and potential moderate flooding from early Saturday morning until Saturday afternoon; residents should complete preparations now.
SHELBY COUNTY – A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Shelby County, effective immediately, by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL. This watch includes the communities of Columbiana, Pelham, and Alabaster. Residents should complete all preparations for hazardous wind and potential moderate flooding as soon as possible.
The NWS forecasts peak winds of 30-40 mph with gusts up to 55 mph, expected from early Saturday morning until Saturday afternoon. These winds can cause limited damage, including to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes. Large tree limbs may break, and some trees could be snapped or uprooted, potentially leading to impassable roads from debris and scattered power outages. Residents are advised to move to safe shelter before winds become hazardous.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 1-3 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. This presents a potential for moderate flooding, which could lead to evacuations and rescues. Rivers and streams may swell, and floodwaters could impact structures, underpasses, and low-lying areas. Driving conditions will become hazardous, and some road closures are possible. Heed any flood watches and warnings, as failure to take action may result in serious injury or loss of life.
Tornadoes are not expected, according to the NWS. For more information and to prepare, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
