Residents in Autauga, Barbour, Bullock, Dallas, Elmore, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Montgomery, and Pike counties are currently under a Tropical Storm Warning. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Bibb, Chambers, Chilton, Clay, Coosa, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Lee, Perry, Pickens, Randolph, Russell, Shelby, St. Clair, Sumter, Talladega, Tallapoosa, and Tuscaloosa counties.
The NWS reports that Hurricane Isaias is located approximately 450 miles south of Birmingham, AL, with maximum sustained winds of 110 mph, moving north-northeast at 15 mph.
Immediate actions for residents:
- Secure loose outdoor items as winds gusting up to 50-60+ mph are expected tonight through Saturday, potentially causing downed trees and power lines.
- Prepare for widespread rainfall of 1.5 to 4 inches, with isolated areas receiving up to 5 inches, increasing the risk of flash flooding, especially in urban and poor drainage areas.
- Eastern portions of Central Alabama, particularly east of Interstate 65, face a Level 1 to 2 severe risk for isolated tornadoes. Have multiple ways to receive Tornado Warnings and be ready to shelter quickly.
- If you are in a mobile or manufactured home, or near large trees, plan to move to a safe shelter.
- If you live in a flood-prone area, plan to move to higher ground.
- Follow advice from local officials regarding evacuations.
The NWS advises against focusing on the storm's exact forecast track, as hazards extend well beyond the center. Check your emergency plan and supplies kit. The next update is expected around 11 AM CDT today or sooner if conditions warrant.
