Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Shelby County: Prepare for Winds Up To 55 MPH
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Shelby County, effective October 8 at 7:10 PM CDT, with residents advised to prepare for winds up to 55 mph and potential moderate flooding.
SHELBY COUNTY – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Shelby County, effective immediately as of October 8 at 7:10 PM CDT. Residents in Columbiana, Pelham, and Alabaster should now be taking protective actions against hazardous winds and potential flooding.
Peak wind gusts are forecast to reach 55 mph, with sustained winds between 25-35 mph. Damage is possible to lightweight structures, tree limbs, and some trees may snap or uproot. Scattered power and communication outages are anticipated. Drivers should be aware that some roads may become impassable due to debris, particularly on bridges and elevated roadways.
A Flood Watch is also in effect. Rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches are expected, with locally higher totals possible. This could lead to moderate flooding, causing rivers and tributaries to swell and potentially overflow. Evacuations and rescues are possible in vulnerable areas. Heed all flood watches and warnings.
Tornadoes are not expected, according to the NWS, though gusty winds and showers may still occur. This Tropical Storm Watch is set to expire on October 9 at 3:15 AM UTC.
