SHELBY COUNTY, AL – A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Shelby County, including Columbiana, Pelham, and Alabaster, by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, effective today, October 8, 2026, at 12:59 PM CDT. This watch is set to expire at 9:00 PM CDT.

Residents should prepare for hazardous winds with peak gusts up to 55 mph. Efforts to protect property should be underway now. Potential impacts include damage to porches, awnings, and sheds, along with downed trees and scattered power outages. Complete preparations before winds become hazardous.

A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 3-6 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. Moderate rainfall flooding could prompt evacuations and rescues. Heed all flood watches and warnings; consider protective actions if you are in a flood-vulnerable area. Rivers and tributaries may become swollen, and roads could become impassable.

There is also a potential for a few tornadoes. If a tornado warning is issued, be ready to shelter quickly. The NWS advises having emergency plans in place for all potential threats. For more information, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
