Omaha Police Nab Suspect in Old Market Burglary Spree
OMAHA, Neb. — Police apprehended a 28-year-old suspect late Friday in connection with multiple burglaries targeting retail shops in Omaha's Old Market district, a bustling area known for its brick-lined streets, galleries and restaurants drawing thousands weekly. The break-ins, reported over seven days ending May 1, 2026, involved shattered storefront glass and ransacked interiors at least three businesses, including a jewelry store and boutique clothing outlet, according to initial reports from the Lincoln Journal Star. No specific losses were disclosed, but officers recovered tools matching crime scene evidence during the arrest near 11th and Harney streets.
The suspect, whose name was not released pending formal charges, faces multiple counts of second-degree burglary and criminal mischief, Omaha Police Department spokesman Officer Michael abond said in a statement Saturday. 'This individual was positively linked through surveillance video and witness tips to all four incidents,' Abond noted, highlighting the role of Old Market security cameras installed after a 2024 crime surge. The district, a cornerstone of Nebraska's largest city with over 500,000 residents, saw property crimes rise 12% last year, per city data, prompting heightened patrols.
Business owners expressed cautious optimism. 'We've been on edge, boarding up windows nightly,' said Maria Gonzalez, manager of Old Market Gems, one of the targeted stores. The arrest follows a week of community alerts via the Omaha Police app, which garnered 15 tips leading to the takedown. Investigators are probing possible accomplices, with court appearance set for Tuesday in Douglas County District Court.
