Strong Storm Near Kings Mountain: Seek Shelter Indoors

A strong thunderstorm is currently impacting parts of Cleveland, Gaston, Cherokee, and York counties, according to a Special Weather Statement issued by the National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg SC.

As of 9:03 PM EDT, radar indicated a strong thunderstorm 9 miles west of Gastonia, near Kings Mountain, moving south at 10 mph. This storm is expected to bring wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea-sized hail.

Residents outdoors in affected areas should consider seeking shelter inside a building immediately. Gusty winds could cause tree limbs to fall and unsecured objects to be blown around. Minor hail damage to outdoor objects is possible.

Impacted locations include Gastonia, Kings Mountain, Grover, Earl, Crowders Mountain State Park, Kings Mountain State Park, Bessemer City, Patterson Springs, Blacksburg, and Bethany. The Special Weather Statement is effective until 9:45 PM EDT tonight, September 21, 2026.
