Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Winston County, Hazardous Winds and Flooding Expected
A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Winston County, effective immediately, with hazardous winds and significant flooding rain expected through October 10 at 10:00 PM CDT; residents should secure property and prepare for possible flooding and outages.
Winston County residents, particularly those in Double Springs, are urged to prepare immediately as the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, has issued a Tropical Storm Warning effective October 9 at 6:57 PM CDT. This warning remains in effect until October 10 at 3:00 AM UTC (10:00 PM CDT).
Forecasters predict peak winds of 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Residents should complete all efforts to protect property as soon as possible and move to safe shelter before hazardous winds begin. Potential impacts include damage to unanchored structures, broken tree limbs, and some uprooted trees, leading to possible road closures from debris. Scattered power and communication outages are also possible. Hazardous driving conditions are anticipated on bridges and elevated roadways.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 2-4 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. Moderate flooding is a significant concern. Emergency plans should account for potential evacuations and rescues. Residents in flood-vulnerable areas should consider protective actions and heed all flood watches and warnings, as failure to act could result in serious injury or loss of life. Rivers and small streams may overflow, and floodwaters could enter some structures. Driving conditions will become hazardous due to flooded roads and parking lots.
The NWS indicates the situation is unfavorable for tornadoes, and none are expected at this time. However, gusty winds from showers and thunderstorms are still possible. For more information and preparedness tips, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
