E. Jean Carroll Seeks Payment Following Jury Verdict

WASHINGTON – Advice columnist E. Jean Carroll asked a judge Tuesday to require former President Donald Trump to pay her $5 million. This request stems from a jury verdict that determined Trump sexually abused her in the 1990s and subsequently defamed her in 2019.

The payment amount corresponds to the sum a jury awarded Carroll in May. A federal jury in New York found Trump liable for battery and defamation. The jury did not find Trump liable for rape.

Trump's legal team had sought to delay the payment. They filed an appeal and requested a hold on the judgment, which the Second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals denied last month. The Supreme Court also declined Trump's emergency appeal, clearing the way for Carroll to pursue payment.

Carroll originally sued Trump in 2019, alleging he defamed her after she publicly accused him of sexual assault. She amended her lawsuit after New York State passed the Adult Survivors Act, which allowed a new window for individuals to file civil lawsuits concerning past sexual assaults.
