Red Flag Warning Issued for High Fire Danger in Humboldt & Elko Counties
A Red Flag Warning is in effect for parts of Humboldt and Elko Counties from Friday afternoon until Friday evening due to high winds and low humidity, with a Fire Weather Watch following on Saturday.
A Red Flag Warning has been issued for Humboldt County (Quinn area), Western Elko County, northern Eureka and Lander Counties north of Interstate 80, Central Elko County, and Eastern Elko County. The National Weather Service in Elko, NV, issued this warning due to critical fire weather conditions, effective from Friday afternoon, October 8, until Friday evening, October 8.
A Fire Weather Watch will then be in effect from Saturday morning, October 9, through Saturday evening, October 9, for the same areas, adding Fire Weather Zone 424. Residents should prepare for conditions that could lead to rapid fire spread.
Sustained winds are expected to reach 15-25 mph with gusts up to 25-30 mph on Friday afternoon, increasing to 20-25 mph with gusts up to 35-40 mph on Saturday. Humidity levels will drop as low as 10-15% on Friday and 19-22% on Saturday. The highest threat is in Fire Zones 437 and 469 due to active wildfires combined with these high winds.
Any fires that develop are likely to spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended. A Red Flag Warning indicates that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring or will shortly. A Fire Weather Watch means critical fire weather conditions are forecast to occur. Monitor later forecasts for potential Red Flag Warnings.
