Diné College Student Dean Holyan Qualifies for National Finals Rodeo

Dean Holyan, a Diné College student, qualified for the 2026 College National Finals Rodeo in tie-down roping. The competition runs June 14-20 in Casper, Wyoming.
Holyan, who studies Social and Behavioral Sciences, earned his spot through the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Grand Canyon Region. He works as a music and entertainment director for Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association events while maintaining full-time academics.
After beginning his collegiate career out of state, Holyan endured nearly two years away from competition following injuries that required surgery. He returned to Diné College this season and posted some of his strongest performances.
"It's been a long time coming," Holyan said. "Rodeo is all I've ever known. It's been a roller coaster with injuries, but coming back home to Diné College and making it to Casper makes it worth it."
His father, Edward Holyan, serves as Diné College's rodeo coach. His grandfather, the late Dean C. Jackson, founded the rodeo program as president of Diné College.
Diné College President Dr. Deborah Jackson-Dennison, daughter of Dean C. Jackson, said her father viewed rodeo as a pathway to scholarships and leadership for Navajo student-athletes. She called Holyan's qualification "a proud moment for Diné College and our Navajo Nation communities."
