Diné College Clears Pell Grant Backlog After Fire

Diné College has processed all outstanding Pell grants for summer and fall 2025 after months of delays caused by a fire, staff turnover, and the death of former President Dr. Charles "Monty" Roessel in January.
President Dr. Deborah Jackson-Dennison, who took office after Roessel's death, made financial aid her first priority. By May 21, the college had processed 100% of Summer 2025 Pell grants, 95% of Fall 2025 awards, and 39% of Spring 2026 disbursements.
A fire at the Tsaile campus destroyed the Student Union Building, which housed the financial aid office and critical records. The college also contended with staff turnover and changes to federal financial aid systems during the same period.
The Office of Navajo Nation Scholarship & Financial Assistance sent personnel with federal aid expertise to accelerate processing. Other financial aid programs continued without interruption during the delays.
Jackson-Dennison said the college will conduct external reviews to identify gaps and strengthen processes.
