CFCC Student Preserves Veterans' Stories on YouTube

Luke Basso has recorded more than 100 veterans and historical witnesses over seven years, capturing firsthand accounts that textbooks overlook.
Basso, 21, launched his YouTube channel Filmperia at 15 while living in upstate New York. He has interviewed World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans, along with civilians who lived through major historical events. He enrolled at Cape Fear Community College in 2024 after graduating from Ashley High School.
"We're losing these veterans every single day," Basso said. "I hope I'm making a difference by helping veterans ensure their stories are preserved."
Moving to Wilmington three years ago expanded his access to interview subjects. The area's concentration of veteran organizations opened doors unavailable in New York.
"When I first started, it was very limited. Just asked everybody I knew," Basso said. "Everything just blew up. I think it's because there are so many veteran groups and organizations here. This really is all about connections."
Basso's interest in military history began at 14, when he bought and sold military antiques. He credits history instructors Mr. Sorensen and Mr. Beaulieu with supporting his work outside the classroom.
Vietnam veterans have affected him most. "They were treated horribly after the war, physically and mentally, and it's still impacting them," he said.
In July 2025, Basso traveled to Afghanistan, one of few Americans to visit since the war ended in 2021. In March 2026, he went to Ukraine. Both trips solidified his goal of becoming a war correspondent.
Basso plans to graduate with his Associate in Arts from CFCC in December before transferring to the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
