CFCC Student Builds Photography Business While Learning English
Leidy Ward Carreno received recognition at Cape Fear Community College's annual student recognition ceremony for outstanding achievement in English as a Second Language.
Carreno, from Colombia, enrolled in CFCC's ESL program to strengthen her communication skills while managing Takin It Light Photography, a family business she runs with her husband, a retired military member. The couple photographs nature, landscapes, and sports.
"I have learned more English vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation," Carreno said. "I am also improving my listening skills and speaking."
The ESL classes addressed a practical need: Carreno wanted to improve her workplace English to better communicate with clients and manage daily operations.
Carreno plans to study graphic design at CFCC to expand the business's creative services. "My goal is to continue studying, working hard, and growing my small business little by little," she said.
CFCC offers free ESL courses. Information is available at cfcc.edu/esl.
