Wildwood Wildfire Prep: Home Safety Tips Now

Wildwood residents living in or near forested areas should prepare their homes and yards now to reduce wildfire damage, the Florida Forest Service said.

Wildfires can start from arson, lightning strikes, and debris burning. Nearly 8 out of 10 Florida wildfires are human-caused, according to the agency.

Residents should take these steps:

Clear your yard. Remove dead vegetation and debris. Maintain a defensible space around your property.

Harden your home. Use fire-resistant materials and seal vulnerable areas.

Burn safely. Follow local laws on burning yard waste.

Report suspicious activity. Call 911 to report any fire, suspicious smoke, or arson.

Prepare to evacuate. Assemble an emergency supply kit and know your evacuation route before fire threatens your area.
