York County Grants $75,000 for Freeman Center Press Box
York County Commissioners approved a $75,000 grant from the Visitors Improvement Fund to build a press box at York University's Freeman Center.
York County Visitors Bureau Director Alex Saathoff and York University's Jared Stark presented the application to commissioners last week. Stark said the press box will enclose an open area at the venue, which hosts university sports, community events, and homeschool programs.
Commissioner Randy Obermier supported the project over the university's initial request for air conditioning funds. "York University is a wonderful asset but I felt the press box was a better fit for the use of those funds," Obermier said.
Commissioner Grotz voted against the grant, citing concerns about using tax dollars for a non-tax-paying entity. Obermier countered that the improvement fund, drawn from lodging taxes paid by travelers, is intended to promote tourism and attractions like Nebraska's oldest county fair in York.
Saathoff said the fund holds $375,474, with $122,000 already allocated for other projects. Monthly receipts range from $15,000 to $25,000.
All commissioners except Grotz voted in favor.
