House Passes Bill to Establish Permanent Daylight Saving Time

WASHINGTON – The U.S. House of Representatives voted Tuesday to approve legislation that would establish daylight saving time as a permanent national standard. The measure, if enacted, would eliminate the practice of adjusting clocks forward and backward twice annually.

Supporters of the bill, including the White House, contend the change would provide additional daylight during the evening hours. They cite a potential benefit for activities that commonly occur after typical work or school hours.

This congressional action represents a step toward altering the long-standing practice of seasonal clock changes across much of the United States. The bill now moves to the Senate for further consideration.

Lawmakers who advanced the legislation emphasized the consistency a permanent daylight saving time would bring. They detailed various scenarios where extended evening daylight could affect daily routines and commerce.

The White House has publicly backed the proposal. Administration officials outlined potential advantages they perceive in maintaining daylight saving time throughout the year.
