A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Elmore County, including Wetumpka and Tallassee, effective October 8 at 10:05 AM CDT by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL. This watch indicates that tropical storm-force winds are possible within the next 48 hours.

Residents should prepare for hazardous wind conditions, with peak gusts potentially reaching 40 mph. Efforts to protect property should begin immediately. Potential impacts include damage to lightweight structures, broken tree limbs, and scattered power outages. Completing preparations before winds become hazardous is advised.

Moderate flooding rain is also anticipated, with 2-4 inches of rainfall expected, and locally higher amounts possible. Emergency plans should include the potential for significant flooding, which may prompt evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings.

The NWS also reports a favorable situation for tornadoes, with the potential for several, some possibly intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if issued.

The watch is effective until October 8, 2026, at 6:15 PM UTC. For more information and preparedness resources, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
