Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Elmore County: Prepare Immediately
A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Elmore County, including Wetumpka and Tallassee, with tropical storm-force winds, flooding rains, and potential tornadoes expected within 36 hours; residents should complete preparations and seek shelter immediately.
ELMORE COUNTY – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Elmore County, effective immediately. Tropical storm-force winds are expected within the next 36 hours. Residents in Wetumpka and Tallassee are specifically advised to complete all preparations now.
Peak winds are forecast at 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, with potential for winds between 39 to 57 mph. Damage to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes is possible. Expect many large tree limbs to break and some trees to snap or uproot, leading to scattered power outages and hazardous driving conditions. Move to safe shelter before winds become hazardous.
A Flood Watch is also in effect. Rainfall of 1-3 inches, with locally higher amounts, could lead to moderate flooding, prompting evacuations and rescues. Rivers and streams may overflow, and roads could become impassable. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life.
Conditions are favorable for several tornadoes, some potentially intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly. The warning is effective until 12:15 AM UTC on October 9, 2026. For more information, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
