A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Elmore County, including Wetumpka and Tallassee, calling for immediate preparations for hazardous winds, moderate flooding, and the potential for several tornadoes; residents should move to safe shelter and complete property protection efforts now.
A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Elmore County, including Wetumpka and Tallassee, by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, effective immediately as of October 8 at 7:10 PM CDT. This warning indicates severe conditions are expected, posing an immediate threat to life and property. The warning is set to expire on October 9 at 3:15 AM UTC.
Residents should prepare for hazardous winds of 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Potential impacts include damage to lightweight structures, numerous broken tree limbs, and some snapped trees. Expect scattered power and communications outages, with a few roads possibly becoming impassable due to debris. All remaining efforts to protect property should be completed as soon as possible, and residents must move to safe shelter before winds become hazardous.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 1-3 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. Moderate flooding could prompt evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and small streams could overflow. Flooding may enter structures and cause hazardous driving conditions. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life.
The NWS also reports a favorable situation for several tornadoes, with a few possibly intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats are urged to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings, and be ready to shelter quickly if a warning is issued. Tornadoes could cause significant damage, power loss, and communication failures.
