Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Elmore County; Prepare for High Winds and Flooding

Elmore County is under a Tropical Storm Warning with immediate action required to prepare for high winds up to 45 mph and moderate flooding from 1-3 inches of rain, according to the NWS.

A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Elmore County, including Wetumpka and Tallassee, effective immediately until 6:30 PM CDT today, October 9, 2026. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, urges residents to complete property protection efforts now and move to safe shelter before hazardous winds begin.

Forecasters predict peak winds of 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, posing a limited threat of damage to unanchored structures, large tree limbs, and some fences. Driving conditions may become hazardous, especially on elevated roadways, and scattered power outages are possible.

A Flood Watch remains in effect, with additional rainfall of 1-3 inches expected, and locally higher amounts. This could lead to moderate flooding, prompting evacuations and rescues in vulnerable areas. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and small streams could overflow. Floodwaters may enter structures, and roads could become impassable. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to act could result in serious injury or loss of life.

Tornadoes are not expected, though gusty winds may accompany showers and thunderstorms. For more information and safety resources, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
