ELMORE COUNTY – A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Elmore County, affecting Wetumpka and Tallassee, effective immediately. The National Weather Service in Birmingham, AL, issued the warning today, October 9, at 9:56 PM CDT, indicating severe and immediate threats.

Residents should shelter from dangerous winds, as peak wind forecasts are 45-55 mph with gusts up to 80 mph, expected until early Saturday afternoon. These strong tropical storm force winds pose a significant threat to life and property. Last-minute preparations to protect life and property should now be complete.

A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 1-3 inches of rain possible, with locally higher amounts. This could lead to moderate flooding, potentially causing evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may become swollen, and small streams could overflow. Flooding may impact underpasses, low-lying areas, and poor drainage areas, making driving hazardous. Heed any flood watches and warnings; failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life. There is currently an unfavorable situation for tornadoes.
