Tropical Storm Warning for Elmore: Prepare for Winds Up to 60 MPH
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Elmore County, including Wetumpka and Tallassee, with winds up to 60 mph and significant flooding expected; residents should seek safe shelter immediately.
ELMORE COUNTY, AL – A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Elmore County, including Wetumpka and Tallassee, effective immediately as of October 9 at 4:20 PM CDT by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham. Residents should move to safe shelter before hazardous winds begin.
Peak wind gusts are forecast to reach 25-35 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph possible. The NWS warns of potential for wind speeds between 39 and 57 mph. Prepare for limited wind damage, including damage to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes. Expect many large tree limbs to break, with some trees snapping or uprooting. Roadways may become impassable due to debris, and scattered power and communications outages are possible.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 1-3 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. Moderate flooding is a significant threat, potentially prompting evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and small streams and ditches could overflow. Floodwaters may enter structures, and driving conditions will become hazardous due to flooded roads and bridges. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to act could result in serious injury or loss of life.
Tornadoes are not expected, according to the NWS, though showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds may still occur. This warning is effective until October 10 at 12:30 AM UTC (7:30 PM CDT on October 9). For more information, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
