ELMORE COUNTY, AL – October 8, 2026 – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Elmore County, effective immediately and expiring at 9:00 PM UTC today. This watch includes the communities of Wetumpka and Tallassee. Residents are urged to take immediate protective actions due to potential hazardous winds, significant flooding rain, and the possibility of multiple tornadoes.

Plan now for hazardous winds, with peak gusts potentially reaching 40 mph. Efforts to protect property should be underway, and all preparations must be completed before winds become hazardous. Damage to unanchored mobile homes and sheds, broken large tree limbs, and scattered power outages are possible. Driving conditions may become hazardous on bridges and elevated roadways.

A Flood Watch is in effect with 2-4 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts. Moderate flooding is possible, which may prompt evacuations and rescues. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to act could result in serious injury or loss of life. Consider protective actions if you are in a flood-vulnerable area.

The situation is also favorable for several tornadoes, with a few possibly intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings, and be ready to shelter quickly. Tornadoes could cause significant damage, power loss, and communications failures.
