Colfax County Fire Districts Ban Outdoor Burning
Colfax County officials banned outdoor burning across five fire districts serving Raton effective immediately, citing drought conditions and weather that elevates wildfire risk.
The Fire Marshal issued the restrictions under county ordinance 2006-1. The ban affects the Ute Park, Farley, Miami, Colfax County Rapid Response, and Moreno Valley fire districts.
All existing burn permits are revoked. Residents cannot use fire pits, chimineas, burn barrels, charcoal grills, or any device burning solid fuel. Debris burning, slash piles, recreational fires, campfires, fireworks, and spark-generating activities like welding or grinding near dry vegetation are prohibited.
Propane and gas grills are allowed if used safely away from flammable materials. Chainsaws with factory-installed spark arrestors remain permitted.
District chiefs will monitor conditions and expand the ban to additional fire districts if needed. Residents should report any wildfires immediately.
