SFWMD Prepares for Heavy Rain in South Florida

West Palm Beach residents should monitor weather updates as the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) prepares the regional water management system for potential heavy rainfall. Forecasts indicate significant rain may begin this evening and continue through Saturday afternoon.

The SFWMW works year-round to protect communities from flooding and keep South Florida’s primary flood control system storm-ready. While June is Flood Control Awareness Month, the district notes flood control is a shared responsibility among the SFWMW, local governments, drainage districts, homeowner associations and the public.

In efforts to address rising sea levels, extreme weather and changing rainfall patterns, the SFWMW also invites public comment on its draft District Sea Level Rise and Flood Resiliency Plan. This plan seeks to strengthen defenses against environmental shifts.

The district recently celebrated the completion of an upgraded water control structure near Naples, bordering the Bird Rookery Swamp and Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. This project, a collaboration with the Big Cypress Basin (BCB) Board and officials from Collier County and Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, enhances flood protection infrastructure.
