5-Year-Old Boy Killed in East Haven Pedestrian Accident

EAST HAVEN, Conn. – A 5-year-old boy died Thursday afternoon after being struck by a car while walking home from school, East Haven police reported.

Cooper Villano was hit around 3:20 p.m. at the intersection of Foxon Road and Bennett Road, near Deer Run School and across the street from a firehouse.

East Haven Fire Chief Matthew Marcarelli said firefighters heard screams and rushed to the scene. Paramedics attempted to save Cooper, but his injuries were too severe. Marcarelli described the event as a traumatic experience for his firefighters, some of whom knew the boy and his family. The department brought in peer support for staff.

A memorial has begun to grow along Foxon Road, featuring candles and teddy bears alongside an initial rose and pumpkin.

Resident Gina Macholl visited the memorial to honor Cooper. “I just wanted to honor little Cooper. He was just walking home from school, doing something he did every day with his family,” Macholl said. She recalled seeing Cooper at the Little League field, describing him as “always laughing and smiling, playing.” Macholl added, “He’s loved. He’s so loved.”

Jenny Kulikowski from Bobby Crabtree Chevrolet also visited the memorial to show support.

The East Haven Academy PTO organized a meal train for Cooper’s family. The East Haven school district is providing support services for students and staff.

The driver of the car remained at the scene. Police reported no charges filed as of Friday, and the investigation is ongoing.
