West Melbourne Water Main Flushing Through January 2024

West Melbourne residents may experience temporary water service disruptions as the Public Works Department continues its regular water main flushing program. The initiative, required by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, aims to maintain water quality throughout the city's distribution system.

The program, which began in December 2007, involves opening fire hydrants to flush accumulated sediment from larger waterlines. This process improves water odor, taste, and color, and ensures adequate chlorine levels.

Customers in affected areas might notice a temporary decrease in water pressure or discolored water. Residents should avoid drinking discolored water until it runs clear. It is safe for bathing and showering. However, residents should avoid doing laundry with discolored water to prevent staining.

The city divides flushing into three zones, with each zone typically taking about one week to complete. The current flushing schedule includes January, April, July, and October. Efforts are made to conduct this work during regular business hours to minimize inconvenience.
