ACC Aligns with Big 12, Big Ten on 24-Team CFP Expansion
The ACC publicly backed a 24-team College Football Playoff, joining the Big 12 and Big Ten. This move creates a united stance among three major conferences regarding future playoff expansion and revenue distribution. The SEC now faces pressure to respond to this coordinated proposal.
The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) announced its support for a 24-team College Football Playoff (CFP) format, aligning with the Big 12 and Big Ten conferences. This decision establishes a collective position among three Power Five conferences regarding the future structure and access to the CFP.
ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips confirmed the conference's unanimous endorsement of the expanded playoff model. This public declaration follows previous statements from Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark and Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti, who each expressed their conferences' preferences for a larger playoff field.
Conference officials involved in the discussions emphasized access, revenue, and scheduling as key factors in their collective support for a 24-team format. The unified stance among these conferences places focus on the Southeastern Conference (SEC) as college football stakeholders consider the next iteration of the playoff system. The current CFP contract expires after the 2025 season.
