Dangerous Rip Currents Expected for Gulf Beaches Through Thursday Morning

Dangerous rip currents are expected along Gulf-facing beaches of Matagorda, Brazoria, Galveston, and Bolivar through Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Beachgoers in Matagorda, Brazoria, Galveston, and Bolivar are advised of dangerous rip currents expected to impact Gulf-facing beaches through Thursday morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) Houston/Galveston TX issued a Rip Current Statement effective immediately, September 30 at 6:38 AM CDT, and expiring October 1 at 12:00 PM CDT.

The affected areas include the Matagorda Peninsula, Brazoria County beaches, Galveston Island, and the Bolivar Peninsula. These conditions pose a significant risk, as rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water.

The NWS urges residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution. If you are caught in a rip current, remember to relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If possible, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If you are unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Always swim near a lifeguard and avoid swimming near rocks, jetties, and piers.
