Tequesta residents who have switched to energy-saving fluorescent lightbulbs must dispose of them properly. These bulbs contain mercury and should not be placed in regular trash or at landfills.

The Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County (SWA) offers a solution for this hazardous waste. Residents can take fluorescent lightbulbs, including long and compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) types, along with other mercury-containing items like thermostats, thermometers, and electrical switches, to any of the SWA's seven Home Chemical and Recycling Centers.

The closest facility for Tequesta residents is the North County Transfer Station at 14185 Military Trail (SWA Road) in Jupiter. It accepts these items Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Businesses generating commercial quantities of mercury-containing items should contact the SWA directly at 561-687-1100 for disposal guidance.

The SWA provides a comprehensive list of accepted household hazardous wastes on its website. Residents can also call 866-SWA-INFO (866-792-4636) for more information.
