High Wind Warning Issued: Damaging Winds Expected, Power Outages Likely
A High Wind Warning is in effect until Sunday, October 11 at 8:00 AM EDT for multiple WNC counties, with damaging winds and widespread power outages expected.
A High Wind Warning has been issued for Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Swain, Haywood, Buncombe, Graham, Northern Jackson, Macon, Southern Jackson, and Transylvania counties, effective immediately until 8:00 AM EDT on Sunday, October 11.
The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg SC reports that elevations above 3500 feet will experience southeast winds of 10 to 25 mph with gusts up to 60 mph. For areas below 3500 feet, a Wind Advisory is in effect with southeast winds of 5 to 20 mph and gusts up to 50 mph.
Damaging winds are expected to blow down trees and power lines, particularly in higher elevations, leading to widespread power outages. Travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. Gusty winds may also blow around unsecured objects and cause isolated power outages in lower elevations.
Residents are advised to remain in the lower levels of their homes during the windstorm and avoid windows. Watch for falling debris and tree limbs. If you must drive, use extreme caution, especially if operating high-profile vehicles.
