Trump Administration Seeks Veteran Truck Drivers Amid Industry Shortage

Why it matters locally: West Virginia, with its significant veteran population and reliance on trucking for goods transport, could see a direct impact from this initiative as veterans transition into civilian careers in a vital industry.

WASHINGTON D.C. — The Trump administration announced an initiative encouraging military veterans to pursue careers as truck drivers upon leaving service. This program aims to address a reported shortage of tens of thousands of drivers within the trucking industry. Administration officials stated the program seeks to connect transitioning service members with training opportunities for commercial driving licenses. The effort comes as the trucking sector faces a demand for more drivers. The White House indicated the initiative emphasizes skills translation, recognizing that many military roles involve operating heavy vehicles. Officials suggest this background positions veterans for success in commercial trucking.
